GLORIA DAVIES - R.I.P.
19/06/1939 - 17/07/2023
Wenvoe Petanque Club is sad to announce that Gloria Davies, passed away peacefully on Monday 17th July 2023 after a short illness.
Gloria moved to Wenvoe when she married Alun, and they began playing in the village in the early '70s - even before the Club was constituted in 1976.
Petanque was very much a family affair, for the Davies', with Gloria and her late husband, Alun playing, both her children, Steve and Caroline, and even some their children joining us from time-to-time on Sunday mornings for a social "knock".
Even in her last game, Gloria was pointing well; as one of our opposition said recently, she's one of those really annoying players who always seem to have a perfect last boule that slips into the head and breaks your heart.
She had recently moved back into the heart of the village to a new-build apartment, had settled in and was enjoying her new surroundings.
Gloria was feeling unwell after playing in a WPA League match on Wednesday 5th July at Dinas Powys Athletic Club, and was taken into hospital the day after with a suspected stroke.
She passed away peacefully at 6pm on Monday 17th July.
She was a warm-hearted, generous, yet unassuming lady who will be deeply missed.
The Club would like to send its sincerest condolences to her children, Steve and Caroline, and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren at this saddest of times. Our thoughts are with you all.
Gloria's funeral will be held on Friday, August 18 2023 at 14:00 at Barry Crematorium.
Gloria's wake will be at The Beech Tree, Old Port Road, Wenvoe CF5 6XN.
Gloria's family have asked Wenvoe PC members to wear their Club shirts.

DAVID "DAI" CANNAN - R.I.P.
09/01/1944 - 05/04/2023
Wenvoe Petanque Club is sad to announce that Dai Cannan, passed away peacefully on Wednesday 5th April 2023 after a battle with cancer.
Born and raised in Wenvoe, Dai had been a member of Wenvoe PC since the 1980s. He was the Club's Treasurer for many years, and was involved in the running of the Welsh Petanque Association over a long person as well. His dedication to the sport in Wales was recognised by the WPA when they made him an Honorary Life member several years ago.
Known throughout the sport in Wales, the UK and much of Europe, Dai was universally popular and always had a joke ready to tell - both on and off the piste.
In recent years, Dai had also taken up bowls at the South Wales Bowls and Recreation Centre in Sully and, again was very competitive, and quickly became a popular club member.
Ever-present in the village of Wenvoe, Dai was involved in several committees, at the local playgroup and as a charity fund-raiser.
He will be missed as much for his company as for his play.
Dai's funeral will be held on
THURSDAY,4th MAY 2023 at 15:00.
The Service will be held at:
St. Mary's Parish Church, Old Port Road, Wenvoe. CF5 6DF

TONY JELLINGS - R.I.P.
Wenvoe Petanque Club is sad to announce that Tony Jellings, passed away peacefully on Wednesday 10th August 2022 after a short stay in the University Hospital of Wales.
Tony joined Wenvoe PC in 2008, and regularly played in the Club's League teams and a number of open and National competitions.
Tony played a huge part in the organisation and support of the Club's hosting of the 2010 Celtic Challenge. The Club would not have been able to put on such a successful event without Tony's amazing found-raising efforts. Tony also played in the competition.
Tony had recently celebrated his 80th birthday.
Tony's funeral will be held on
FRIDAY,9th SEPTEMBER 2022 at 13:30.
The Service will be held at:
The Church of The Resurrection, Grand Avenue, Ely, Cardiff. CF5 4HX
followed by interment at:

MIKE COLEMAN - R.I.P.
25/12/1943 - 08/08/2021
Wenvoe Petanque Club is sad to announce that long-standing Club President, Mike Coleman, passed away on Sunday 8th August 2021 after a short illness.
Ever-popular, Mike had been a member of Wenvoe PC since the 1980s, and had served as Club President for many years.
Many of our friends will have played against Mike and felt the impact of his classic "boule-to-boule" shooting style.
Always willing to support and share his advice, Mike will be deeply missed.
Mike's funeral will be a private, family-only service.
The Club's thoughts and sympathies are with Gill and all their family at this difficult time.

WELSH CUP FOR CLUBS 2017 CHAMPIONS
Having defeated Monkstone PC and Penarth but narrowly lost to Caerleon RFC PC in the round-robin competition, we found ourselves lying second to Caerleon who'd won all 3 of the round-robin encounters.
We subsequently had to play Caerleon RFC PC again, in a 2-leg Final encounter on 5th March. The WPA set the 2 legs to be played at "neutral" venues - the morning encounter being played at Pentwyn Leisure Centre in Cardiff with Wenvoe being designated the "Home" side.
The results were:
Singles: 9-13, 13-5, 3-13, 11-13, 13-8, 7-13 (2 wins to 4, 4 match points to 8)
Doubles: 13-6, 13-12, 7-13 (2 wins to 1, 6 match points to 3)
Triples: 10-13, 13-10 (1 win each, 5 match points each)
Giving a final total of 5 game wins to 6 (15 match points to 16)
The afternoon encounter was played at Monkstone PC in Cardiff with Caerleon being designated the "Home" side.
The results were:

Triples: 13-12, 9-13 (1 win each, 5 match points each)
Giving a final total of 4 game wins to 7 (11 match points to 20)
The overall final totals being:

Historical Documents Unearthed
Joan Bosley, widow of the late Ray Bosley has very kindly passed on a number of historical documents she's found relating to the Club dating back to the '70s & '80s.
Arguably the most important of these is a Consultative Document setting out a Draft Constitution of the Club. This document is dated 7th July 1976, meaning 2016 will be the Club's 40th Anniversary year!
In addition, there are documents relating to an agreement with the (then) Sports Council For Wales to make use of their all-weather facilities at the (then) National Sports Centre For Wales in Sophia Gardens in Cardiff's city centre and letters relating to the Margam Park French Day celebrating Bastille Day on 14th July 1984. Copies of these documents can be found in the Archive section of the website.
Most interesting, however are a number of documents relating to the Club's hosting of the British - Welsh Championships held on 21st-22nd June 1980 - the first time these were held outside England. A new Page has been created to display copies of these documents.

Wenvoe Welsh Open Triples - Sunday 25th August 2013
The 35th Welsh Open Triples took place at the Wenvoe Arms on Sunday 25th August 2013.
Nine teams turned out to support the event, disappointing compared to last year, but the weather was kind and it was an all round good day.
With 3 rounds played before lunch, the top four Teams entered into the Main competition and played a "round-robin", with the remaining 5 Teams playing for the Plate.
The Main honours eventually went to "Last of The Summer Wine" (Karen MacLeod, Terry Lloyd & Bob Pugh, all from Wenvoe PC), with "At The Bar(n)" (Peter Beresford [Caerleon RFC PC], Marie & Derek Jones [The Barn PC]) coming in as runner's-up.
In the Plate competition, the honours went to another Wenvoe PC Team, The Raiders (Joanie Roberts, Jeff Ball & Dave Cannan) - beating The Three Amigos (Jane & Rob Hayman and Mike Jacques, again from Wenvoe PC) by a single point.
The Committee and Members of Wenvoe Pétanque Club would like to thank all the players and visitors for their support and also to Chris Teague and his staff at The Wenvoe Arms for their hospitality.
